Intro – Navigating Social Media and Mental Wellness in the PR Industry

Social media is mainstream in public relations work. For PR professionals, platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn aren’t just for fun, they are part of the workplace. Creating engaging content, keeping track of current trends, and helping a brand’s reputation. However, when your job is to live in an online space, the line between professional work and personal escape can get blurry.

    why this

I chose to focus on this topic because, as someone who aspires to be a public relations professional, I have discovered that there are unique circumstances with evolving technology and social media that the PR industry faces. Unlike most users, PR professionals can’t simply “log off” or delete an app when they get overwhelmed; careers are at stake.

Research shows that PR is one of the most socially demanding jobs. It has long hours and high workloads, that often include off-the-clock work calls and weekend hours. This contributes to faster burnout and high stress.

    what you’ll find

This blog is dedicated to exploring the intersection of social media and mental health with a specific emphasis for PR professionals.

On this blog, you can expect evidence-based insights, including the latest research on social media and its effects on mental health and well-being, and practical strategies such as stress management and self-care routines. You will also find tips and tricks to improve your mental well-being when your job requires being active on social media.

    purpose

I believe a conversation about social media and how it affects mental health is a common topic, but when social media is your job, it’s a harder conversation and something that has yet to have a spotlight shined on it. By openly talking about the challenges and sharing solutions, we can have a healthier approach to social media as a whole.

This blog is meant to be more than just a collection of tips for you. By sharing your experiences with social media burnouts, we can create a community where we can talk about it.

When I announce new blog posts on LinkedIn, I encourage you to comment on those posts with your experiences and thoughts related to topic. This will create a community where we can improve our mental well-beings together.
